In a keenly contested competition, 19 golfers from the Lancaster and District Group enjoyed an excellent day’s competition at the local round of the West Lancashire Provincial Golfing Tournament held at Bentham Golf Club.
As well as a number of team and individual trophies to play for, there was also the opportunity for six qualifiers to represent the group in the West Lancashire Provincial Golfing Tournament final at the Garstang Golf Club.
Great Eccleston Lodge No 8895, represented by Robert (Bob) Whittingham, Dennis Eccles and Les Newlands won the Lancaster and District Group Trophy, with Heysham Lodge No 4108 winning the Morecambe and Heysham Trophy for the second year in succession. The ‘best individual score’ shield was won by John Cherry from Poulton le Sands Lodge No 1051, whilst David Ainsworth of Wyreside Lodge No 2605 and Les Newlands won the ‘nearest the pin’ and ‘longest drive’ competitions respectively.
At the presentation dinner which followed the competition, the principal guest, Lancaster and District Group Vice Chairman Neil McGill, thanked Bentham Golf Club for all their hard work in ensuring a successful event.
Special praise however, was kept for Arthur Laycock, the group golf representative who, after many years of organising this event, was standing down. After congratulating all the participants, Neil thanked all the lodges and chapters for their donations which, together with the £110 raised from the raffle, will be donated to the West Lancashire Freemasons Charity.
The six qualifiers for the Provincial golf final are Bob Whittingham, David Ainsworth, Mike Kilroy of St Michaels on Wyre Lodge No 8348, and Les Newlands, Dennis Eccles and Peter Roberts of Heysham Lodge.
